A Message from Lee

Dear Folks,

Someone asked me yesterday about a phrase I used in my sermon - “doomscrolling.” It denotes an obsessive scrolling through the fire hose of internet posts (not necessarily actual verifiable news) and feeling worse and worse and even near panic. This affects folks all across the political spectrum.

While I know that headlines are supposed to get our attention, they are not supposed to distort the story. Much of modern media, though, seems to deliberately seek a big adrenaline response in pursuit of ratings.

Yes - many of the stories are about important issues. Getting reliably accurate information is important. Still, - As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of people, ...But speaking the truth in love...Eph 4:14f

This was an appeal for Christian unity given the ethical teachings of the letter to the Ephesians.

Of course, there are varieties of Christian beliefs and the politics that often result from those. However, when we pray for the peace of God which passes all understanding, we are affirming our reliance on a spiritual center that keeps us centered and grounded in our faith in God’s providence. Hope is one of the cardinal virtues we proclaim not as the absence of strife but as something deeper and more solid. Our Lord was personally very aware of evil effects but was not overcome by them.

Peace be with you!

Lee
